President Volodymyr Zelenskyy signed a decree revoking Ukrainian citizenship from Odessa Mayor Hennadiy Trukhanov.
This was reported on the air of a telethon, citing sources in the government.
In addition to Trukhanov, the president’s decision deprived former People’s Deputy from the “OPZZH” Oleg Tsarev and ballet dancer Serhiy Polunin of Ukrainian citizenship.
“Confirmation has been received regarding their Russian citizenship, so this decision is logical,” the interlocutor emphasized.
Earlier, a petition to strip Trukhanov of his citizenship appeared on the president’s website. As of October 14, it had received 3,000 more votes than the required number.
Separately, Zelenskyy informed about the signing of decrees against the background of confirmation of Russian citizenship for a number of individuals. However, the president did not name any names.
“The presence of Russian citizenship in some individuals has been confirmed – appropriate decisions have been prepared regarding them. The decree has been signed,” his message says.
Earlier, the Commission under the President adopted a decision to deprive the Mayor of Odessa, Gennady Trukhanov, of Ukrainian citizenship . After the president’s signature, his powers will automatically terminate, and the Secretary of the City Council, Ihor Koval, will begin to perform the duties of mayor.
Recall that in September 2024, blogger and volunteer Serhiy Sternenko reported that Odessa Mayor Gennady Trukhanov had Russian citizenship. Trukhanov himself later responded to the information about his alleged Russian citizenship.
