Trump administration prepares deal on Greenland

The administration of US President Donald Trump is preparing a draft agreement on Greenland, which it plans to propose to the island’s authorities.
This is reported by the British publication The Economist.
According to the magazine, Washington is discussing the possibility of concluding a Free Association Agreement with Greenland and the United States. Such an agreement could provide financial support for the island and an increase in the standard of living of the population in exchange for the transfer of security and defense powers to the United States.
The United States already has similar agreements with several Pacific island nations, under which Washington guarantees financial assistance and internal self-government while assuming responsibility for defense and security.
The publication notes that the Trump administration’s policy towards Greenland pursues two goals. The first is to increase tensions between the island’s authorities and Denmark and stimulate separatist sentiment. The second is to try to conclude an agreement directly with the Greenlandic leadership, bypassing Copenhagen, although such attempts have previously been met with a harsh refusal.
The magazine emphasizes that the scenario of the direct annexation of Greenland by the United States seems unlikely. At the same time, Washington’s very activity around the island has already caused concern among European leaders.
It is worth noting that there is already a US military base on Greenland. The terms of the current agreements with Denmark do not limit the number of US troops on the island, but a significant increase in the contingent may require approval from the Danish authorities.
