US President Donald Trump finalized the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas at a summit in Sharm el-Sheikh, marking a pivotal step toward ending the recent Gaza conflict.

According to CNN, the meeting was attended by Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu did not attend the summit due to the celebration of the Jewish holiday Simchat Torah.

“This is a great day for peace, a great day for the Middle East,” Donald Trump said in a speech broadcast on ABC News. The US president called the Gaza agreement “the biggest and most complex deal” in the entire peace process.

“It’s often said that World War III will start in the Middle East, but it won’t. We don’t want it to start anywhere — and it won’t happen,” he added.

It should be noted that the contents of the agreement have not been disclosed at this time.

The ceasefire in the Gaza Strip came into effect on October 10. Already on October 13, Hamas handed over 20 Israeli hostages to representatives of the International Committee of the Red Cross , and is also to hand over the bodies of 28 dead prisoners. Israel, in turn, announced the release of more than 1,900 Palestinian prisoners.

Earlier, Trump announced that Israel and the Hamas group had reached an agreement on the implementation of the first phase of the peace plan, which concerns the Gaza Strip.
