US President Donald Trump has announced Washington’s intention to become more actively involved in providing security guarantees for Ukraine, including possible participation in peacekeeping operations, air support, and intelligence activities as part of a potential peace agreement.
The American leader told reporters about this during a briefing at the White House.
Trump confirmed that the United States remains committed to implementing the commitments made in July of this year to European partners, in particular, to assisting in peacekeeping activities, providing air support and intelligence.
The American president called such steps part of a “security agreement” that he considers critical to moving toward lasting peace and stability in the region.
“This is called a security agreement. We will help with security guarantees, because, in my opinion, it is necessary to achieve the goal,” Trump emphasized.
Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reported that on December 11, the Ukrainian and American teams discussed one of the key documents, which concerns security guarantees.
The US was represented at the talks by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth, special envoy Steve Witkoff, adviser Jared Kushner, several US generals, and security initiatives representative Josh Gruenbaum. NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte also participated in the video call.
The Ukrainian side insists that security guarantees can become an important alternative or complement to Ukraine’s future membership in NATO, providing clear support mechanisms in the event of large-scale aggression or an attempt to seize territory.
In their speeches, Trump and other senior US officials have repeatedly emphasized that Washington continues to support Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity by providing military assistance, including weapons, training, and intelligence.
However, a direct guarantee of military intervention in the event of a new escalation or attack by Russia remains a subject of ongoing negotiations. There is currently no published and ratified agreement that would oblige the US to automatically take military action on the side of Ukraine.
As a reminder, representatives of the United States, Ukraine, France, Germany, and the United Kingdom will hold a meeting in Paris on December 13 to discuss US President Donald Trump’s peace plan.
As reported, Donald Trump’s new peace plan is almost no different from the scandalous “28 points” and once again demands serious concessions from Ukraine.
