US President Donald Trump has announced a three-day ceasefire in the war between Russia and Ukraine. According to him, the cessation of hostilities will last on May 9, 10 and 11.
He wrote about it in Truth Social .
Trump noted that Russia celebrates Victory Day, but Ukraine also played an important role in World War II.
“Russia celebrates Victory Day, but so does Ukraine, because it also played an important role in World War II,” Donald Trump said.
According to the US president, the ceasefire will include a complete cessation of hostilities, as well as an exchange of 1,000 prisoners from each side.
Trump said he was the initiator of the ceasefire. He also thanked Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Russian President Vladimir Putin for their support for the initiative.
“I hope this is the beginning of the end of a very long, deadly and bitter war. Negotiations to end this great conflict, the largest since World War II, are ongoing, and we are getting closer to a resolution every day,” said Donald Trump.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky later confirmed the agreements on the exchange of prisoners of war and a temporary ceasefire. According to him, in recent days there have been many appeals and signals regarding the situation around May 9 in Moscow in connection with Ukrainian long-range strikes.
“Red Square is less important to us than the lives of Ukrainian prisoners of war, who can be returned home,” said Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
The President of Ukraine stated that within the framework of the negotiation process, mediated by the American side, Russia agreed to exchange prisoners of war in a 1,000-for-1,000 format.
“A regime of silence should also be established on May 9, 10, and 11,” Volodymyr Zelenskyy said.
He added that he instructed the Ukrainian team to promptly prepare everything necessary for the prisoner exchange. In addition, Zelensky thanked the US president and his team for their diplomatic participation in the negotiations.
“We expect that the United States will ensure the implementation of the agreements by the Russian side,” the President of Ukraine said.
Recall that Russia declared a so-called ceasefire on May 8 and 9 , but at the same time threatened to strike the center of Kyiv in case of attempts to disrupt the parade in Moscow. In addition, the Russian Defense Ministry stated that the civilian population of Kyiv and employees of foreign diplomatic missions should leave the city in advance in case of “attempts to disrupt the parade.”
Subsequently, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that Ukraine had not received any official appeal from Russia regarding the format of the cessation of hostilities, which had previously been reported on Russian social media. The Head of State emphasized that it is realistic to ensure a ceasefire by this time, and Ukraine will act in a mirror manner, starting from the specified moment.
At the same time, according to a veteran of the Russian-Ukrainian war, reserve major Oleksiy Hetman, Russia does not want to negotiate directly with Ukraine, but only with the United States regarding a ceasefire on May 9. This means that there will be no real ceasefire .
