Trump believes that Ukraine will have to accept peace on Russia’s terms to end the war.
This was reported by Politico, citing a senior White House official.
“Trump is expressing confidence to his associates that the talks are still on track,” the source said.
However, there is growing recognition that the negotiations, which Trump has described as “one that could lead to a three-way summit within a week,” are a difficult task.
According to three sources, the US President still does not want to pressure Vladimir Putin. Moreover, he is convinced that he has more leverage over Ukraine and the EU.
“He has long believed that Russia has the upper hand in war and needs to be coaxed into peace talks. Ukraine, on the other hand, is heavily dependent on the US for weapons and intelligence. So there are more pressure points to get them to agree to a deal,” said one former administration official.
A source told Politico that Trump believes Ukraine will have to agree to a deal largely on Russia’s terms to end the war.
The Wall Street Journal previously stated that a lasting peace in Ukraine is unlikely without Trump’s tougher actions against Russia and Putin .
Recall that the United States plans to take on only a “minimal” role in providing security guarantees to Ukraine.
As reported, US President Donald Trump said that it will become clear within the next two weeks whether peace can be achieved in Ukraine . If this does not happen, he warned of the possibility of finding “another approach” to resolving the war.
