The US is calling on the European Union to impose stiff 100 percent tariffs on trade with China and India to increase economic pressure on Russia and force it to make peace. In response, America is ready to take similar measures and join a joint sanctions campaign.

This was stated by US President Donald Trump during a discussion with EU leaders on possible actions to end the war in Ukraine, The Telegraph reports, citing diplomatic sources. It is noted that Trump made such a proposal during informal consultations with European leaders on strengthening sanctions policy. He also expressed disappointment that, despite the West’s attempts to stop the war, Russia continues its massive missile attacks on Ukrainian cities.

According to media reports, the American leader also emphasized the need for secondary sanctions against those states that continue to maintain economic ties with the Kremlin, in particular, buying Russian oil.

This comes amid rising tensions between Washington and New Delhi. The US has already imposed a 25% tariff on Indian companies’ purchases of Russian oil, bringing the total tariff on Indian goods to 50%.

The White House also announced a change in tone in relations with Russia. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessant warned that if sanctions against Moscow’s trading partners are applied more widely, the Russian economy could be on the verge of collapse. He emphasized that there is a kind of competition going on now – between the ability of the Ukrainian military to maintain its defense and the endurance of the Russian economy under sanctions pressure.

As a reminder, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessant said that Washington is ready to expand sanctions pressure on Russia, but this effect can only be achieved through joint action with the European Union.

As reported, the European Commission and the United States of America plan to discuss ways to exert economic pressure on Russia.
