Trump envoys’ visit to Kyiv under threat: Witkoff worried about Russia

US President Donald Trump’s special envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner may not come to Kyiv, despite their previously announced planned visit. According to The Kyiv Independent, Washington is discussing alternative plans after Witkoff allegedly began to fear the trip amid Russian warnings.

This was reported to The Kyiv Independent by an interlocutor familiar with the situation.

According to him, the Russian side does not want American representatives to travel to the Ukrainian capital, and Witkoff seems to be paying special attention to Moscow’s position.

“The Russians don’t want them to come here, to Kyiv, and Witkoff is always sensitive to Russian sentiment. They tell them there that it’s dangerous,” the publication’s source said.

Just the day before, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced that Witkoff and Kushner had confirmed the possibility of their arrival in Ukraine. He stressed that Kyiv was ready to hold the meeting and considered it important for the United States to continue to actively participate in diplomatic efforts.

“We are ready to meet with them in Ukraine. This is very important. It is important that the United States remains active,” Zelenskyy said.

The trip was previously planned for September 5-6. First, the American representatives were to visit Moscow, and then Kyiv. However, there is currently no official confirmation of the route and dates from Washington.

This would be Witkoff and Kushner’s first visit to Ukraine. Before that, they had repeatedly visited Moscow and met with Vladimir Putin.

Amid diplomatic plans, Russia continues to attack Ukraine. As of September 3, Kyiv had already endured eight consecutive days of massive drone attacks. On the morning of September 4, a Russian strike again caused damage and a fire in the capital.

Thus, the planned trip of American envoys to Kyiv has come into question at the very moment when Washington is trying to resume the diplomatic process to end the war.
