Trump hesitates between supporting Kyiv and wanting to reach an agreement with Putin: how does this affect allies

US President Donald Trump continues to take an inconsistent stance on Russia’s war in Ukraine, his vacillations in rhetoric and decisions increasingly worrying Washington’s allies.
This is reported by Le Monde .
Last week, Trump admitted the failure of the August summit in Anchorage, Alaska. There, he repeatedly showed respect for the Russian leader but received no concessions. On October 13, the US president threatened to supply Ukraine with Tomahawk cruise missiles if Vladimir Putin did not stop the aggression.
However, after a phone call with the Kremlin leader on October 16, Trump backed away from his previous statements. Putin suggested holding a new meeting in Budapest, where he could count on the support of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban. The next day, while hosting the Ukrainian president at the White House, Trump said that the delivery of the missiles was being delayed due to limited US supplies and a desire to “provoke an escalation.”
Journalists recalled that after the summit in Anchorage, Russia began massive bombing of Ukrainian cities and civilian infrastructure. At that time, Trump wrote on his social network that “it’s time to stop the killing and make a deal,” thus once again putting the aggressor and the victim on the same level.
The publication emphasizes that such a position leads to political paralysis, which Russia is actively exploiting. During a meeting at the White House, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky emphasized: “We want peace. Putin does not want it. Therefore, we need to put pressure on him.”
Despite this, Trump continues to avoid decisive action. His refusal to transfer Tomahawk missiles is another example of inconsistency. These very weapons could become a powerful argument in strengthening Ukraine’s defense capabilities.
In addition, the US president has repeatedly threatened sanctions against Russia, but has never implemented them. The publication notes that during a meeting in February in the Oval Office, Trump told Zelensky that he “doesn’t hold the cards.”
“Meanwhile, the way Trump himself plays his cards remains irritating,” the journalists concluded.
By the way, the planned meeting between US President Donald Trump and Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin in Budapest has provoked a sharp reaction in the European Union. European diplomats believe that holding negotiations on the territory of an EU member state without the participation of Brussels is a humiliation for Europe and a “political nightmare.”
Recall that US President Donald Trump announced on September 16 that he would meet with the Kremlin leader in Hungary , without specifying the date. According to him, the purpose of the summit is to discuss possible ways to end the war between Russia and Ukraine. This will be preceded by a meeting of high-level advisers. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban offered himself as a mediator during the negotiations.
As is known, preparations are underway in Budapest for a meeting between US President Donald Trump and Russian dictator Vladimir Putin. Later, it was reported that Hungary does not plan to arrest Russian dictator Vladimir Putin on a warrant from the International Criminal Court (ICC) when he arrives in Budapest to meet with US President Donald Trump.
