US President Donald Trump has announced new 30% tariffs on goods from the European Union and Mexico. The new rates will take effect on August 1 unless the partners agree to new trade terms. It is part of the White House’s broader economic strategy that has already affected more than 25 countries.

This is reported by Bloomberg .

US President Donald Trump continues to escalate trade tensions with partners. On Saturday, July 12, he announced the introduction of 30% tariffs on goods from the European Union and Mexico, which will take effect on August 1, 2025, if more favorable agreements for the US are not reached by then.

The wording of the letters was similar to more than 20 other warnings sent to countries that have not concluded or renewed trade agreements with the United States.

In his letter to the European Union, Trump did not name specific products, but warned that he would act decisively to “protect American manufacturers and workers.”

In an address to Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, he acknowledged that Mexico was helping to secure the border, but stressed that this was not enough to stop the flow of drugs.

“Mexico has still not stopped the cartels from trying to turn all of North America into a drug trafficking hub. Obviously, I cannot allow this to happen!” Trump wrote.

The publication notes that the EU had hoped for a compromise and was even working on a preliminary agreement, but Trump’s unexpected letter undermined the progress of the negotiations. Now both sides are preparing for a new round of consultations to avoid a tariff war.

This week, Trump has already threatened tariffs on more than 25 countries , including Brazil (50%) and Canada (35%), which could signal a major shift in US trade policy.

By the way, US President Donald Trump announced the introduction of a new 35% tariff on imports of goods from Canada . The new tariffs will take effect on August 1. In addition, Washington plans to introduce general tariffs of 15% or 20% for most other trading partners.

As a reminder, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessant said that the US is close to new trade agreements, the conclusion of which will be announced in the near future.

As previously reported, the US federal court for international trade has ruled to block the entry into force of global import tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump, stating that the head of state exceeded his authority.
