US President Donald Trump is considering changes to how NATO operates for countries that fail to meet defense spending requirements, potentially limiting their participation in Alliance decisions and the application of the principle of collective defense.
This is reported by The Telegraph .
According to sources, the proposals include increasing pressure on member states that fail to meet defense spending targets, including limiting their participation in key Alliance decisions.
We are talking about possible changes in the following issues:
- NATO enlargement;
- conducting joint operations;
- application of the principle of collective defense.
In particular, an option is being considered under which countries that do not increase defense spending to 5% of GDP may be deprived of the right to vote in certain decisions.
The “pay to participate” approach is also being heard in informal discussions.
In addition, Donald Trump admits the possibility of reducing the US military presence in Germany, which has been discussed previously.
At the same time, it is noted that these proposals have not yet been officially presented at the Alliance headquarters.
At the moment, NATO countries adhere to a baseline level of defense spending of at least 2% of GDP, but the Alliance leadership expects to present plans to achieve 5% at one of the upcoming summits.
By the way, NATO countries generally support US President Donald Trump’s policy of containing Iran’s nuclear and missile capabilities.
As a reminder,the United Arab Emirates is considering a military response to Iran’s attacks, which have already caused significant damage to the country . Since the start of the war, the UAE has suffered hundreds of missile and drone strikes, killing people and injuring dozens.
