US President Donald Trump held an official meeting with the newly appointed Russian Ambassador to the United States Alexander Darchiev.
Russian media reported this.
During the ceremony of presenting his credentials, the Russian diplomat assured that in his position he would work to restore and improve bilateral relations between Moscow and Washington.
Darchiev noted that, despite the difficult legacy of past years, Russia and the United States as large states are doomed to peaceful coexistence. According to him, a “window of opportunity” has appeared to restore full-fledged interstate relations, which should be built on mutual respect, equality and consideration of new geopolitical realities.
The ambassador added that during the short but constructive conversation with Trump, the parties moved from a “complete lack of dialogue” to a pragmatic conversation, which, although difficult, is necessary. He emphasized that there is now a positive impulse from the presidents of both countries, as well as a certain mutual understanding and personal contact.
Darchiev also reported that preliminary consultations are continuing on a number of issues: normalization of the work of diplomatic missions, resumption of air traffic, and discussion of a potential meeting between the presidents of the United States and Russia. Although these topics were not raised at the ceremony itself, according to him, they remain the focus of further diplomatic work.
Before his appointment to Washington, Darchiev already had diplomatic experience in the United States, and from 2014 to 2021 he headed the Russian embassy in Canada. He is known for his tough rhetoric towards the United States and the West, but now he focuses on the need to establish pragmatic relations.
