US President Donald Trump plans to address Congress with a proposal for a significant increase in defense spending in the budget. The goal is to increase funding to $1.5 trillion, which would be one of the largest increases in a decade.

This is reported by Bloomberg .

According to journalists, the budget proposal includes $1.1 trillion in base discretionary spending for the Department of Defense, as well as another $350 billion in additional resources. The additional funding is related to the US war against Iran.

At the same time, the administration plans to cut non-defense spending by about 10%, which is about $73 billion.

The decision is expected to be the largest single-year increase in the defense budget since World War II.

Journalists note that this initiative comes against the backdrop of the president’s attempts to convince the public of the advisability of war against Iran and on the eve of the midterm elections in November.

The article also states that there may be controversy among Republican lawmakers over cuts to domestic programs, but increasing defense spending is likely to gain support.

Earlier it was reported that the United States Senate supported the defense budget bill for fiscal year 2026 in the amount of $925 billion . The document provides for an increase in funding for the Ukraine security assistance program to $500 million. Now the Senate and the House of Representatives must agree on the final text of the bill.
