Donald Trump promised European leaders that during his meeting with Putin he would not talk about the territories of Ukraine, but would insist on an unconditional ceasefire.
This was reported by CNN, citing sources in European diplomacy.
It is noted that Trump is going to offer a ceasefire to Putin, but he did not use the word “unconditional”. He believes that the ceasefire will be a manifestation of goodwill on the part of Russia
He promised that he would not negotiate over Ukrainian territory. This created the impression that he would not consider any Russian offers to gain control over Ukrainian territory in exchange for a ceasefire.
Expectations for the meeting are low, CNN sources told CNN. They also said Trump expressed support for security guarantees for Ukraine that would include a U.S. role.
In addition, according to diplomats, the idea of imposing new sanctions against Russia was discussed, in particular, secondary sanctions against China for important Russian oil – in case the meeting is not successful.
As a reminder, Trump announced that on Friday, August 15, he will travel to Russia, where he plans to meet with Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin.
It later became known that Trump and Putin would meet at Elmendorf-Richardson Military Base in Anchorage.
The day before, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessant said that Donald Trump would use the topic of sanctions during a conversation with Russian dictator Vladimir Putin.
