During a discussion with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and European leaders, US President Donald Trump suggested that a potential peace deal between Ukraine and Russia “needs to involve a territorial exchange.” Zelensky responded that “Putin cannot be trusted” and insisted on a trilateral summit involving the US, Ukraine, and Russia.
This is reported by Axios .
Trump said that, in his opinion, as part of a possible peace agreement between Kyiv and Moscow, “an exchange of territories is needed.”
He emphasized that he is “not from this region” and cannot make final decisions about the territories, but believes that border issues should be the subject of direct negotiations between the president of Ukraine and the Russian dictator.
“Trump said that Vladimir and Vladimir should discuss territories with each other, not with him,” the publication quotes the source as saying.
According to another source, President Zelenskyy told Trump that “Putin cannot be trusted.”
The article notes that Ukrainian and European participants in the conversation were unsure of Trump’s true goals in the upcoming talks with Putin, which are scheduled to take place in Alaska. However, it is noted that this meeting may meet their objectives.
At the same time, the Russian president has repeatedly rejected the idea of an unconditional ceasefire.
During the discussion, Zelensky also stressed that no diplomatic decision can be made without Ukraine’s participation. He proposed holding a trilateral summit involving himself, Donald Trump, and Vladimir Putin. According to the publication, Trump supported the idea, but Putin “seems to be indifferent to it.”
It is worth adding that after a joint video call with US President Donald Trump, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, and French President Emmanuel Macron held a joint press conference.
As a reminder, Trump announced that he would travel to Russia on Friday, August 15, where he plans to meet with Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin. It later became known that Trump and Putin would meet at Elmendorf-Richardson Air Force Base in Anchorage.
The day before, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessant said that Donald Trump would use the topic of sanctions during a conversation with Russian dictator Vladimir Putin.
By the way, European leaders issued a joint statement in support of Ukraine ahead of Donald Trump’s planned meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin . 26 of the 27 leaders of the European Union have made their position public – with the exception of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban.
Earlier, the media reported that Ukraine’s partners may ease sanctions against the Russian Federation if a complete ceasefire is concluded .
