German Chancellor Friedrich Merz hopes that after meeting with Donald Trump, Vladimir Putin will begin negotiations on a ceasefire in Ukraine.
He wrote about this in H.
Merz noted that after three and a half years of full-scale invasion, Russia may agree to a ceasefire and end hostilities.
“We expect that President Putin will take President Trump’s offer of dialogue seriously and, after the meeting in Alaska, will begin negotiations with Ukraine without preconditions,” the Chancellor wrote.
Merz believes that the goal should be a summit attended by Volodymyr Zelensky. At this summit, a ceasefire agreement should be concluded. He emphasized: “Territorial issues can only be resolved with the consent of the Ukrainians.”
The Chancellor emphasized that Europe stood as a united front, sending clear signals to President Trump before his departure for Anchorage.
“I stay in touch with him. President Trump can now take an important step towards peace,” added Friedrich Merz.
As a reminder, on August 14, Donald Trump made several statements before a summit with Vladimir Putin in Alaska, expressing his opinion on the Kremlin’s readiness for an agreement, doubts about a quick ceasefire, plans for a new meeting with Zelensky, and his intention to discuss borders and territorial issues.
As reported, US President Donald Trump said that he does not seek to impose new sanctions against Russia, preferring diplomacy and negotiations . At the same time, he emphasized his readiness to apply economic restrictions if the situation requires it.
