Trump-Putin meeting: what Kyiv expects from the talks in Alaska
Ukraine’s Ambassador to the United States, Oksana Markarova, said the United States, under President Donald Trump, will act from a position of strength in negotiations with Russia. She expressed hope that Washington’s decisive steps, including sanctions, will help convince Vladimir Putin to end the war. Ukraine is ready to consider any options for a ceasefire — both full and partial — to stop the killings and move to diplomacy.

Markarova stressed that Ukraine “prays for US President Donald Trump to be effective” and able to achieve concrete results in negotiations with Russia. She emphasized that the front line in eastern and southern Ukraine is the de facto border between “evil and good,” and the crucial question remains where exactly it will pass – on the territory of Ukraine or in Europe.
“The front line in eastern and southern Ukraine is the line between evil and good. The question is where it will pass: on our territory, on our borders, or in Europe… I am confident that the US will act from a position of strength and together we will find a solution to stop Russian aggression,” she said.
Markarova is confident that Washington will act decisively, and that coordinated actions by the United States and Ukraine will be able to stop Russian aggression. The ambassador noted that sanctions packages and secondary restrictions aimed at those who help Russia should become a key tool for pressure on the Kremlin.
The diplomat also recalled that it was Russia that started the war, illegally annexing Crimea and occupying part of Ukrainian territories since 2022. She emphasized: Ukraine seeks peace and is ready to be as constructive as possible during negotiations.
Markarova separately noted the importance of a ceasefire as an intermediate step on the path to a diplomatic settlement, emphasizing that President Trump expressed support for such an initiative back in February. In her opinion, the end of the war will have global consequences, as it concerns not only Ukraine, but also the security of all of Europe.
Earlier, the American Institute for the Study of War reported that the Kremlin plans to turn the planned summit in Alaska into a tool of informational and diplomatic influence to undermine the unity of the United States and Europe in support of Ukraine.
Recall that US President Donald Trump informed European leaders of his intention to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin , and later to organize a trilateral meeting with the participation of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. By the way, the meeting between US President Donald Trump and Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin is scheduled for the end of next week .
