Trump Washes His Hands of the Ukraine War

Trump’s statement should be taken for exactly what it is — another Trump post. We’ve seen plenty of these, some insightful, some questionable. But let’s not be deceived: currently, there are four distinct avenues aimed at ending the war.

  1. Military support for Ukraine

  2. Economic support for Ukraine

  3. Sanctions pressure on Russia

  4. Negotiations with Putin

Trump’s post is about none of these. In fact, it reads more like a post about self-immolation:

  • Russia’s economy is already bending under its own weight, so sanctions are unnecessary.

  • The military situation is such that Ukraine, with EU support, can reach its 1991 borders — and perhaps even go beyond.

  • We will supply Ukraine with as many weapons as NATO Europeans are willing to buy, and let them decide how to use them.

In fact, no matter how reassuring it may sound to read or hear such statements, they are overly optimistic and do not fully reflect reality. While the Russian economy is indeed struggling, this has been a gradual process rather than an immediate collapse. The military situation remains extremely complex, with territorial losses being reported daily by the Deep State. Sanctions pressure has essentially stalled at the levels of early 2025, and Russia has largely adapted to it. As for negotiations, the U.S. president will reportedly comment in a month on whether Putin has deceived again — not in two weeks, as some might hope, because that idea has already become something of a meme.

In short, yesterday’s posts and statements from Donald Trump offer nothing new that could influence the end of the war. There is nothing about the United States’ role, nothing about expanding military or economic assistance. Selling weapons, while not entirely negative, cannot be equated with support. For comparison, China claims it does not support Russia either, yet still sells engines and components.

Of course, there is not yet enough information to conclude. But if we focus solely on the U.S. president’s rhetoric, then aside from a tone that may be reassuring for Ukraine, there is nothing substantively new in these statements.

“Everything is going positively by itself, the Russian economy will collapse on its own without new sanctions, and Ukraine will soon storm Moscow with EU money. Good luck to everyone!”

As a reminder, on September 23, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met with US leader Donald Trump. Zelenskyy informed Trump about the successes on the front. In particular, according to him, within several months, the Defense Forces managed to reoccupy 360 square kilometers and capture about a thousand Russian soldiers.

In turn, the American president is convinced that Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, who does not want to give up Russian oil, will soon change his mind. He also emphasized that the Russian economy is in a difficult situation, and Ukraine is successfully stopping its army.

In addition, US President Donald Trump spoke at the UN General Assembly, making several statements regarding the war in Ukraine, Russian oil, and the Biological Weapons Convention. At the same time, he changed his position on the war in Ukraine and stated that Kyiv, with the support of Europe, can return all the territories seized by Russia.
