The administration of US President Donald Trump has rejected attempts by allies in the Middle East to start diplomatic talks on a ceasefire in the war with Iran. The White House said that Washington is currently focused on continuing the military operation.
This is reported by Reuters .
According to journalists, several Middle Eastern countries have tried to initiate talks aimed at ending the war, which began 2 weeks ago after large-scale US and Israeli airstrikes on Iran.
At the same time, Iran has rejected the possibility of a ceasefire until the US and Israel stop their strikes, two senior Iranian sources told the agency.
Journalists note that mediation efforts to start negotiations were carried out by several states, including Oman and Egypt. However, these attempts were unsuccessful.
According to sources, Oman, which previously acted as a mediator in the negotiations, has tried several times to restore communication channels, but the White House has made it clear that it is not interested in doing so.
A senior White House official confirmed that the US president has rejected offers to start negotiations and intends to continue the military operation.
“He is not interested in this right now, and we will continue the mission without interruption. Maybe one day such a day will come, but not now,” a White House spokesman said.
Another senior US official said that the operation against Iran is ongoing.
“President Trump stated that the potential new leadership of Iran has signaled a willingness to negotiate and that negotiations will eventually take place. Operation Epic Fury is currently ongoing,” the official said.
According to journalists, the fighting has already killed more than 2,000 people, most of whom are in Iran.
The war also caused significant disruptions to global oil supplies, as shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, through which about 20 percent of the world’s oil is transported, came to a halt.
Journalists note that some American officials and advisers are calling for a speedy end to the war, warning of political risks due to rising fuel prices ahead of the US midterm elections.
At the same time, other officials insist on continuing military action to destroy Iran’s missile program and prevent it from developing nuclear weapons.
According to sources, both sides in the conflict are now showing less willingness to negotiate than at the beginning of the war, when American officials contacted Oman about possibilities for de-escalation.
Iranian officials also tried to use Oman as a conduit to discuss a possible ceasefire, which could have included talks with US Vice President J.D. Vance, the sources said. However, these contacts did not progress.
By the way, after the escalation of the conflict over Iran, Russia may benefit economically from rising world oil prices . This could boost the revenues of the Russian budget, which is largely dependent on energy exports.
As US Vice President J.D. Vance said, the main goal of the US regarding Iran is to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons .
