US President Donald Trump has signed an executive order renaming the Ministry of Defense back to its historical name — the Ministry of War, which it held until 1947.his was reported by the White House press office.

“We won World War I, World War II, and all the wars before that. And after we renamed it the Department of Defense, we won nothing,” Trump said.

The ceremony was attended by the head of the department, Pete Hegseth, who now holds the title of US Secretary of War. He noted that the Department of War was established by George Washington in 1789 and existed until the end of World War II.

The official pages of Hegseth and the department on the social media platform X have already been updated to “Ministry of War.”

Trump previously explained: “I don’t want us to be just on the defensive. We want to be on the offensive, too.”

Politico notes that Congressional approval might be required to officially finalize the renaming.
