US President Donald Trump’s approval rating has fallen to its lowest level of his presidency, while Democrats have widened their lead over Republicans ahead of the midterm elections.
This is evidenced by the results of a Reuters poll.
According to the four-day poll, only 31% of Americans approve of Trump’s job performance as president, down one percentage point from two weeks ago and the lowest rating of any of his terms.
If the congressional elections were held today, 47% of registered voters would vote for Democrats, compared to 35% for Republicans. The party gap has widened to 12 percentage points, the largest Democratic lead of the current election cycle. The results could boost their hopes of regaining control of the U.S. House of Representatives and Senate.
National polls on party preferences reflect the mood of Americans, but they do not take into account all the specifics of the battles in individual states and districts. It is there that the distribution of seats in Congress will be determined, and Republicans have certain structural advantages.
For comparison, a previous Reuters/Ipsos poll conducted two weeks earlier had Democrats ahead of Republicans by seven percentage points — 44% to 37%.
One reason for the weakening of the Republicans’ position was the greater support for Democrats among women. 50% of women surveyed expressed their intention to vote for Democrats, while 32% were ready to vote for Republicans. Among men, Democrats also have an advantage, but it is less significant.
Trump’s decline in popularity comes amid a war with Iran, against which the US launched a military operation in February, jointly with Israel. The war has led to a sharp increase in the price of gasoline, which has increased financial pressure on American households.
The president’s economic policies are also causing public discontent. About 68% of Americans disapprove of them, including 37% of those who consider themselves Republicans.
In addition, respondents trust Democrats more in managing the economy. 40% of respondents consider them more effective in this area, while 33% consider Republicans.
Recall that the midterm elections in the US will be held on November 3. Earlier, Trump said that he would pay every adult American $5,000 in the form of the so-called “Trump dividend” if Republicans retain control of Congress following the November vote.
