The administration of US President Donald Trump is considering the possibility of concluding separate economic agreements with Russia before the end of its war in Ukraine. The White House, according to media reports, is considering this as one possible way to create additional incentives for Moscow to agree to an end to the war.
This is reported by The New York Times, citing two sources familiar with the negotiations.
According to them, the Trump administration is discussing the possibility of concluding certain economic agreements with Russia without the precondition of an end to hostilities.
One American official explained to the publication that such a move could “show that the United States is serious about resetting relations with Russia.”
The specific agreements that Washington and Moscow may consider are currently unknown.
According to the NYT, the Trump team is looking for new ways to encourage the Russian leadership to end the war. One of the sources said that the administration wants to create more economic incentives for the Russian elite to support the movement towards an agreement.
This approach differs from Trump’s previous public stance. Last year, he declared that there would be no economic cooperation with Russia until the war against Ukraine was resolved.
During a recent trip to Moscow by US President Donald Trump’s special envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, the two sides also discussed economic issues. Putin’s aide Yuri Ushakov spoke after the talks about “potentially mutually beneficial Russian-American projects.”
As a reminder, on September 5, Witkoff and Kushnerheld talks with Putin in the Kremlin . During the meeting, the parties discussed the cessation of strikes, further US contacts with Ukraine, and a possible settlement of the war.
Kushner later stated that the territorial issue remains the main obstacle in negotiations between Ukraine and Russia.
