US President Donald Trump supported the passage of a bipartisan bill on sanctions against Russia, initiated by the late Republican Senator Lindsey Graham.
This was reported by CNN, citing a White House representative.
According to the TV channel, Trump’s support could significantly accelerate the bill’s progress in Congress. Earlier, Senator Lindsey Graham, together with Democratic Senator Richard Blumenthal, stated that the US administration was ready to support the document after lengthy negotiations. At the same time, it was still unclear whether the president would personally approve it, as Trump has repeatedly advocated for greater freedom of action in the issue of imposing sanctions.
Senate Republican Majority Leader John Thune said the White House worked closely with Graham on the bill.
“It’s going to take Democrats and Republicans here in the Senate, but I’m hopeful we can do it,” he said.
According to Thune, the sanctions package was one of Lindsey Graham’s top priorities in the final days of his life and could become an important part of his political legacy.
In turn, Richard Blumenthal announced that he plans to discuss with the Senate leadership the final preparation of the document and the timing of its consideration, as well as identify a new Republican co-author of the bill to replace Graham.
In particular, the document is expected to give the US president the ability to impose high tariffs on imports from countries that purchase Russian oil, natural gas, and uranium in order to increase economic pressure on Russia over its war against Ukraine.
“This should be seen as a fitting tribute to Senator Graham — to do it quickly in his memory,” Blumenthal said.
It was previously reported that Bulgaria is ready to support the 21st package of sanctions by the European Union against Russia after the Patriarch of the Russian Orthodox Church Kirill and the founder of Lukoil Vagit Alekperov were removed from the proposed sanctions list.
