US President Donald Trump has threatened the European Union with 17% tariffs on food and agricultural exports.
This was reported by The Guardian.
The corresponding decision will affect many products – from Belgian chocolate to butter from Ireland and olive oil from Italy, Spain and France, which are the largest traders in the US.
It is noted that European Trade Commissioner Maroš Šefčovič received a warning about possible tariffs on Thursday, during talks with US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessant, Trade Representative Jamieson Greer and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnik in Washington.
However, the European Union remains optimistic, hoping to conclude a good trade agreement with the United States.
“But this threat suggests a continuation of the US’s aggressive negotiating stance, aimed at extracting a high price from the EU, which Trump once called “worse” than China on trade,” the publication emphasized.
As a reminder, the US has previously decided to grant a 90-day reprieve to more than 75 countries that are negotiating with US regulators on trade barriers and tariff policies. During this period, mutual duties will be temporarily reduced by 10%.
By the way, the administration of US President Donald Trump plans to conclude 90 trade agreements in 90 days — by July 9.
