US President Donald Trump on January 24 threatened to impose a 100 percent tariff on all Canadian imports if Canada signs a trade deal with China.
He wrote about this in Truth Social.
The statement came amid growing tensions between the US and Canada. Donald Trump said he would not allow Canadian territory to be used as a conduit for Chinese goods to reach the American market.
“If Governor Carney is counting on making Canada a ‘transit hub’ for Chinese exports to the United States, he is seriously mistaken. China will crush Canada and completely absorb it, destroying businesses, social foundations, and the usual way of life,” the US president said.
He stressed that if Canada concludes a trade agreement with China, the United States will immediately apply tough economic measures.
“If Canada makes a deal with China, the United States will immediately impose 100 percent tariffs on all Canadian goods and products,” Donald Trump said.
The statement also notes that Trump suggests that China could use Canada to circumvent US tariff restrictions. Earlier, during a visit to China, Carney called China a reliable and predictable partner and urged European leaders to be more active in attracting Chinese investment.
On January 22, Donald Trump also withdrew an invitation for Canada to join his “Peace Council” initiative aimed at resolving global conflicts. This came after Carney’s speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos, where he criticized the use of tariffs as a tool of political pressure.
Recall that US President Donald Trump has imposed tariffs on imports of goods from eight European countries due to their position on Greenland. The tariffs will be in effect until a deal is reached on the full purchase of the island and will increase to 25% from June 1.
