US President Donald Trump plans to discuss the United States’ withdrawal from the alliance with the NATO Secretary General.
This was reported by the Bloomberg news agency.
As the media notes, this is a “new sign of anger” from the Trump administration regarding NATO’s actions in the Middle East conflict.
During a press conference, White House spokeswoman Caroline Levitt, in response to a question about the possibility of leaving the alliance, said that the American president would discuss this in a few hours when he meets with Rutte.
The NATO Secretary General is currently in the United States to soften Trump’s reaction to the allies’ refusal to help unblock the Strait of Hormuz, which is blocked by Iran.
Levitt, quoting the head of the White House, emphasized that the alliance failed to pass the test during the US-Israeli war against Iran.
“It is quite sad that NATO has turned its back on the American people over the past six weeks, when it is the American people who have been funding their defense,” she added.
Earlier, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that after the end of the war in Iran, the US would review its membership in the North Atlantic Alliance .
Recall that Trump may begin the official process of the United States’ withdrawal from NATO . This decision is seen not only as a threat to the solidarity of the allies, but also as an element of an internal electoral strategy to strengthen ratings.
As is known, Trump stated that the United States no longer needs the help of allies for the operation to restore shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.
