US President Donald Trump hinted to Polish Defense Minister Wladyslaw Kosińska-Kamysz during a meeting in Washington in the spring of 2026 that he should leave the ruling coalition and agree on cooperation with far-right forces. The American president made it clear that such a move would improve the Polish minister’s position in Washington.
This is reported by The Atlantic .
According to the publication, the incident occurred during Kosińska-Kamyś’s spring visit to Washington. The minister arrived for a ceremony to present the Medal of Honor to an American soldier who saved the life of a Polish soldier in Afghanistan. After the event, Trump invited the Polish politician for a private conversation and hinted at the advantages of leaving the governing coalition, which includes liberal pro-European parties.
Kosiniak-Kamysz heads the Polish Peasant Party, which is part of the ruling coalition. According to The Atlantic, he did not take up the offer from the American president.
“An American president asks a politician in an allied foreign country to change the coalition? Nothing like this has happened in Poland since the days when Soviet leaders decided which Polish communists would rule,” the publication says.
The author of the article notes that Trump has previously supported Polish right-wing forces. During the presidential campaign in Poland, he openly supported the far-right candidate Karol Nawrocki, and after his victory, he repeatedly took credit for this result.
The publication also discusses the US administration’s attempts to influence the domestic politics of Romania and Germany. According to the publication, American representatives have promoted political forces close to the MAGA movement, including those with pro-Russian views.
The author emphasizes that support for such forces contradicts Trump’s calls for European allies to strengthen their own defenses. Some of these political forces oppose military aid to Ukraine, defense cooperation in Europe, and increased military spending.
Let us remind you that the conflict surrounding the Constitutional Tribunal has escalated in Poland : deputies from the Law and Justice party (PiS) are declaring a coup d’état and an attempt to seize the institution after the announcement of the removal of its chairman, Bohdan Święczkowski, and his deputy, Bartłomiej Sochanski.
Later, in Poland, former Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki announced his intention to initiate a constructive vote of no confidence in the government of Donald Tusk . He proposed former Speaker of the Sejm Marek Jurek as the new head of government, and the interim cabinet is to operate until the parliamentary elections in 2027.
