The administration of US President Donald Trump is nominating former Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban to be the next UN Secretary-General. Washington expects that Russia and China may also support his candidacy.
This was reported by The Wall Street Journal, citing sources in three countries.
According to the publication, Orban’s name has been mentioned repeatedly during discussions in Washington regarding the successor to the current UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres.
American officials also discussed Orban’s candidacy with representatives of Russia and China. After that, the United States approached the Hungarian politician directly and invited him to join the race.
According to the WSJ, Orban has been receptive to the proposal but has not made a final decision. He does not want to announce his participation until he is sure of sufficient support.
A US State Department official said that Orbán could be supported by at least eight of the 15 members of the UN Security Council, and potentially up to ten.
At the same time, the key position remains the position of Great Britain and France, which, like the USA, Russia and China, have the right of veto in the UN Security Council. London and Paris have not officially announced their position on Orban’s possible candidacy.
According to the WSJ, Trump and US Vice President J.D. Vance may support Orbán if he decides to enter the race. An announcement is possible after the US midterm elections on November 3.
The current UN Secretary-General, António Guterres, will end his term on December 31, 2026.
Recall, in May it was reported that after losing power in Hungary, Orban was considering the possibility of obtaining a position in the UN structures.
In addition, before the April parliamentary elections, Donald Trump publicly supported Orbán and urged Hungarians to vote for him. After the vote, Orbán conceded defeat .
