According to unnamed US officials, after fruitless phone calls, Trump wants a personal meeting with Putin to assess whether he is committed to peace.
However, the Ukrainian president and European leaders are concerned that if Trump looks Putin in the eye, he may agree to his tough demands.
“No one knows right now what Trump wants from Putin on Friday. We don’t know how much we can influence Trump, but we have to keep trying,” a Ukrainian official told Axios.
US officials say Trump’s rhetoric sometimes sounds pro-Russian, in an attempt to push for a deal.
One source told Axios that Trump is still “angry” with Putin.
“For several months, the general opinion was that we could bring down the Russian economy tomorrow. There are more ways to destroy Ukraine. But if he had to choose a side, he would hit the Russian economy. He really has had enough,” the source said.
US officials also stated that if diplomatic efforts fail, Trump will continue to sell weapons to NATO countries for Ukraine.
As a reminder, Trump announced that on Friday, August 15, he will travel to Russia, where he plans to meet with Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin.
