A debate has erupted within US President Donald Trump’s team over when and how to declare victory in the conflict with Iran. Some advisers suggest concluding the operation in the near future, while others insist on continued pressure on Tehran.
Reuters reports this .
According to the agency, economic advisers and administration officials are warning Trump about the consequences of a sharp increase in gasoline prices after the US- Israeli attacks on Iran. They believe that the increase in fuel prices could quickly affect public support for the operation.
In recent days, Trump has begun to speak of the conflict as a limited campaign , a significant portion of whose objectives have already been achieved.
Representatives of the economic bloc, in particular from the Ministry of Finance and the National Economic Council, also warned the White House about the risk of an oil crisis and further increases in fuel prices .
The president’s political advisers also take a similar position . White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles and her deputy James Blair emphasize the political risks and suggest clearly defining what constitutes a victory, as well as making it clear that the operation is coming to an end.
Instead, hardliners oppose a quick end to the campaign . Senators Lindsey Graham and Tom Cotton call for continued military pressure to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon.
Separate pressure is being exerted on the White House by representatives of the populist wing of Trump supporters , including strategist Steve Bannon and TV host Tucker Carlson, who are warning the president against dragging the United States into a new protracted conflict in the Middle East.
Administration sources say Trump is trying to balance these positions . In recent days , his team has also been actively working to calm markets and contain rising oil and gas prices .
As a reminder, the Hezbollah group fired rockets at northern Israel on the night of March 2. In response, the Israel Defense Forces launched strikes on the group’s targets in Lebanon and announced the start of a ground operation.
As is known, on February 28, Israel launched preemptive strikes on Iran, and also attacked Hezbollah targets in southern Lebanon .
