The US-Iran talks in Switzerland have been put in jeopardy after US President Donald Trump’s harsh remarks against Tehran. The Iranian delegation has left the meeting, and the future of the negotiation process remains unclear.
This is reported by Reuters .
The talks, held at the Bürgenstock resort in Switzerland and attended by American and Iranian delegations, were the first since the signing of a memorandum of understanding that called for the restoration of shipping through the Strait of Hormuz and a cessation of hostilities in the region.
On the eve of the meeting, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said that Tehran would not give up its right to enrich uranium.
According to a Fox News journalist, Donald Trump said in a telephone conversation that the Iranian president “better watch his language” and “use his brains,” otherwise the US “will take over another part of the country,” the journalist said, quoting Trump’s words.
Trump also said that the US could take control of the Strait of Hormuz and charge tolls for ships passing through, the journalist said. He also said that the memorandum of understanding was only an extension of the ceasefire, not a final agreement.
Journalist Barak Ravid reported that the Iranian delegation left the talks in protest against the US president’s statements.
“Iranian officials told state media that the Iranian delegation left the negotiating site in protest against Trump’s threats,” Ravid said.
According to Ravid, initially the Iranian side agreed to a joint photo shoot and statements to the press, but after the incident, the delegation left the meeting place early.
Later, the journalist reported that the Iranian delegation probably did not leave the talks in Switzerland.
According to him, he was informed about this by a diplomat participating in the negotiations.
The United States and Iran have signed a memorandum of understanding that is expected to serve as the basis for further talks between the countries. The document outlines key principles for cooperation, including on issues such as the nuclear program, sanctions, and regional security.
As a reminder, Iran announced the closure of the Strait of Hormuz to shipping amid a new escalation with the United States. However, Washington claims that the movement of ships through the strategic sea route continues as usual.
