Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that Donald Trump will participate in the meeting between the leaders of Ukraine and Russia, but only if Vladimir Putin is present.
He is quoted by CNN Turkish service.
Erdogan said that the talks between Ukraine and Russia held in Istanbul “opened the door to peace.” He also stressed that Turkey would continue its efforts to implement a ceasefire.
“Our ultimate goal is to hold a meeting at the level of our country’s leaders and build the desired peace. We also told US President Mr. Trump about this during our meeting,” Erdogan said.
He also added that Trump told him that if Putin visits Istanbul or Ankara to “solve the problem,” he will also come there.
“We will hold the necessary meetings and hopefully meet as soon as possible,” the Turkish leader said.
Erdogan stressed that Russia’s war against Ukraine “must end” and added that a just and lasting peace must prevail in the region.
As a reminder, on June 2, the second round of negotiations between Ukraine and the Russian Federation ended in Istanbul, Turkey, during which the Ukrainian delegation handed over to the Russian side a list of children that Russia must return.
After that, Russian propaganda media published a memorandum on a ceasefire . In the document, the Kremlin demands that Ukraine recognize the annexation of Crimea, four regions – Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson and Zaporizhia – and refuse to pay reparations.
