European Union countries have reached a turning point on the issue of using frozen Russian assets to provide financial assistance to Ukraine, but discussions on technical details are ongoing.
This was reported by Ukrinform, citing a statement by Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk in Brussels.
According to Tusk, a common position has been formed among European leaders on the advisability of using Russian funds for the benefit of Ukraine.
“We have definitely reached a turning point. Everyone agrees that it is worth trying, and that it would be fair, justified and good for Europe to use Russian funds for Ukraine,” the head of the Polish government said.
At the same time, he emphasized that a number of countries seek to obtain maximum legal and financial guarantees, so the discussion on implementation mechanisms is still ongoing.
Tusk added that the European Union is moving towards providing Ukraine with a so-called reparations loan, which will be based on frozen Russian assets.
According to him, the political solution has actually matured, but work remains to be done on the technical and legal details on which the launch of this mechanism will depend.
As previously reported, on December 18, the British government announced a new package of sanctions against the Russian Federation, targeting the energy sector.
