Two air targets spotted near Zmiyino: Romania scrambled fighter jets

In Romania, two Spanish F-18 fighter jets were scrambled on the evening of August 24 after military radars detected two aerial targets near the Ukrainian-Romanian border. Later, contact was lost, and the Ukrainian side reported explosions.

This was reported by the Ministry of National Defense of Romania.

According to the agency, at around 10:37 p.m., Romanian radars detected two targets approximately 25 kilometers northwest of Snake Island. They were moving in the direction of the Romanian border.

To check the situation, the military raised two Spanish F-18s. These fighters are currently based at the 57th Mihail Cogelniceanu Air Base in Romania.

At around 22:55, a warning was issued via the RO-Alert system in the northern part of Tulcea County. A few minutes later, at 22:58, radar contacts with air targets disappeared.

At the same time, information about explosions was received from the territory of Ukraine.

The Romanian Ministry of Defense stressed that no violations of the country’s airspace were recorded. The fighters were deployed specifically to monitor the situation and check for possible threats near the border.

Recall that a Spanish F-18 fighter jet, while patrolling Romanian airspace , shot down a drone that had illegally crossed the country’s border . NATO said that the drone was likely of Russian origin.
