Seven people were killed and 34 others injured in a shooting at a Greek Orthodox church in the southern Jordanian province of Karak. The attack occurred on October 23 during a funeral when two unidentified men opened fire on the procession.

This is reported by Deutsche Welle .

The shooting took place in a church in the village of Hammoud. According to an eyewitness, there were between 150 and 200 people in the church at the time of the attack.

The identities of the attackers and their motives have not yet been established. Jordanian Interior Minister Mazen al-Faraya said a group of “extremists” was involved in the attack. According to local publication Roya News, law enforcement already has the names of the suspects, but they are not yet making them public.

Jordanian government spokesman Mohammad al-Momani said security forces had launched an investigation into the attack.

Jordan’s King Abdullah II condemned the attack and promised a tough response. “We will deal a decisive blow to those who dare to threaten our state,” he said.

Lebanese President Joseph Aoun also condemned the attack and expressed condolences to the victims. US Ambassador to the UN Mike Walz called the reports of the tragedy devastating and called for an end to attacks on Christians around the world.

Armed attacks of this type are rare in Jordan, which has a predominantly Muslim population but also has a Christian minority, particularly in the Karak region.
