Two people died in New York City due to heavy rains and flash flooding on October 30, 2025. The consequences were flooded streets, grounded flights at airports, and delays in public transportation.

This is reported by The New York Times .

On Thursday, October 30, 2025, the city received record rainfall in a short period of time. Journalists reported that approximately “1.85 inches” of rain fell in New York City’s Central Park, and “2.09 inches” fell at LaGuardia Airport.

The resulting flooding flooded basements in Brooklyn and Manhattan. Police said a 39-year-old man was pulled from a flooded basement in Brooklyn by divers and later died in hospital. Another 43-year-old man was found dead in a flooded boiler room in Manhattan.

The flooding caused widespread problems in the city’s infrastructure: subway and commuter rail services were delayed or suspended due to water on the tracks. Traffic was restricted on the Long Island Expressway, and cars were reported stranded in flooded areas.

Kennedy, LaGuardia and Newark airports were also affected, with flights delayed or canceled due to weather conditions and flooding in nearby areas. Weather officials warned of possible more storms and high winds through the evening of October 31.

New York City Mayor Eric Adams noted that “this storm broke the rainfall record for October 30th,” and stressed that the sewage system was not prepared for such a volume of rain.
