Two Russian agents who were preparing a terrorist attack on Maidan were detained in Kyiv

The Security Service of Ukraine has prevented a terrorist attack in the center of Kyiv by detaining two Russian agents who were preparing an assassination attempt on a serviceman of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. According to the investigation, the Russian special services planned to blow up the serviceman’s car near Independence Square, which could have led to numerous civilian casualties.

This was reported by the press service of the SBU.

According to the investigation, one of the suspects was supposed to plant an improvised explosive device with the ability to be detonated remotely under the car of a Ukrainian serviceman. According to the plan of the Russian special services, the explosion was not only supposed to kill the serviceman, but also to cause the maximum number of casualties among the civilian population.

SBU officers discovered a GPS tracker installed on a military vehicle in advance, which allowed them to expose the preparation of a terrorist attack. One of the suspects was detained while trying to retrieve an improvised explosive device from a cache, and the other was detained at her place of residence, where law enforcement officers seized almost 6 kg of explosives.

The investigation established that both women acted separately from each other and were recruited through acquaintances from the Russian Federation who cooperate with Russian special services.

According to the SBU, one of the detainees is an unemployed resident of Sumy region. With the promise of “easy money”, she came to Kyiv, checked into a hotel and, following the video instructions of a curator from Russia, made a homemade explosive device. After that, the woman hid it in one of the capital’s cemeteries, and for conspiracy purposes, she disguised herself as an elderly woman in a headscarf with flowers on the way.

Another person involved was the former owner of a confectionery shop in Sevastopol. According to the investigation, after a failed business, Russian special services offered her help with debt repayment in exchange for cooperation. She arrived in Kyiv, monitored a Ukrainian serviceman, established his travel routes and whereabouts, and during searches, a wig was seized from her, which she planned to use when detonating a car bomb.

SBU investigators informed the detainees of suspicion under several articles of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, in particular, regarding high treason, aiding and abetting a terrorist act, preparation of a terrorist act, and illegal acquisition and manufacture of an explosive device.

The suspects are being held without bail. If convicted, they face life imprisonment with confiscation of property.

The comprehensive measures were carried out by SBU officers in the Autonomous Republic of Crimea in cooperation with the Counterintelligence Department of the SBU under the procedural guidance of the Prosecutor’s Office of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea and the city of Sevastopol.

Earlier, the Security Service of Ukraine and the National Police prevented a terrorist attack near one of the administrative buildings in the center of Kyiv and detained two FSB agents. After planting the explosive device, the suspects tried to flee to Russia through Belarus.

We will remind you that the National Police of Ukraine, together with European partners, exposed a Russian spy network that was preparing murders and terrorist attacks in Ukraine and EU countries.
