MMA star and former UFC champion Conor McGregor has announced his intention to run for president of Ireland, urging citizens and local MPs to support his candidacy.
The athlete himself announced this on Instagram .
Conor McGregor urged citizens to immediately contact local deputies with a request to nominate him, calling them “the pillars of communities.”
“As president, I will not sign any bill until it is first submitted to the people for consideration!” he expressed his vision of the presidency.
The athlete added that MPs are the backbone of communities, because they work harder and do more for the people than the Oireachtas (Irish parliament) MPs, who “time and time again let this country down.”
“If you are an MP who feels like your voice is being ignored, your hands are tied, and your community is being overlooked, then I ask you to support me. Nominate me and I will give you the platform and power to really be heard. If you want to vote for McGregor, start now. Call your local MP today and demand change,” the fighter said.
It is worth adding that Elon Musk has already publicly supported Conor McGregor.
Note that under Irish law, a presidential candidate must be nominated by 20 members of the Oireachtas or four local councils. McGregor has already collected more than 14,000 signatures in support of a petition to change these rules, although he has not yet formally received the necessary nomination. His determined campaign continues in conditions of low popularity among voters – only about 8% would vote for him, according to a poll .
