The United Kingdom has imposed sanctions on the Russian GRU for conducting a long-running campaign of cyber activity and a series of war crimes.
This was reported on the British government website.
The United Kingdom has imposed sanctions against three GRU units and 18 military intelligence officers.
“GRU units have been exposed for their involvement in the bombing of the Mariupol theater, the attack on Yulia Skripal, and cyber operations in support of Putin’s illegal war in Ukraine,” the government statement said.
It is noted that the GRU’s task is to create chaos, discord, and unrest in Ukraine and around the world with devastating consequences.
The sanctions are also aimed at GRU military intelligence officers who were involved in the attack on Yulia Skripal’s devices using malware.
In the UK, Russian intelligence agents targeted:
- mass media;
- telecommunications service providers;
- political and democratic institutions;
- energy infrastructure.
“The UK and our international allies are monitoring Russia and countering its attacks both publicly and behind the scenes,” the statement said.
As a reminder, EU ambassadors have approved a new, eighteenth package of sanctions against Russia . The package focuses on reducing the maximum price for Russian oil, as well as limiting Russia’s “shadow fleet.”
As reported, the Donald Trump administration will impose secondary sanctions and tariffs against Russia if a ceasefire is not achieved in Ukraine within 50 days.
