Ukraine and eight European states join EU sanctions against Iran: details

The European Union has extended sanctions against Iran over its military assistance to Russia, and Ukraine has supported this decision. The restrictions include blocking the assets of sanctioned individuals and a ban on the supply of certain components for the production of weapons to Iran.
This was reported by the European External Action Service.
Together with Ukraine, the extension of sanctions was supported by:
- Albania;
- Bosnia and Herzegovina;
- Iceland;
- Liechtenstein;
- Moldova;
- Norway;
- North Macedonia;
- Montenegro.
The governments of these countries must bring their national legislation into line with EU decisions.
The EU imposed its first sanctions against Iran in the summer of 2023, amid Tehran’s supply of drones to Russia. Later, according to the source, military cooperation expanded, including through Russia’s production of drones based on Iranian designs, as well as the supply of artillery shells and navigation components.
The sanctions include freezing the assets of individuals on the sanctions list and prohibiting banks from processing their payments. European companies are also prohibited from exporting certain components to Iran, including microcircuits, optics, and fuel systems for drones.
The EU also links the restrictions to Iran’s support for militant groups, including Yemen’s Houthis, who have been attacking commercial vessels in the Red Sea, forcing shipping companies to change routes, which has an impact on shipping costs.
The European Council extended the sanctions on July 24. At the same time, 4 people were removed from the sanctions list.
The text also mentions a statement by Iranian representative Mohsen Rezaei about an alleged intention to launch missile strikes on 3 Ukrainian locations after the incident with an Iranian vessel in the Caspian Sea. According to him, this intention was later canceled after an alleged apology from Ukrainian diplomats, but there was no official confirmation of this statement from Ukraine.
By the way, the United States and Iran have not yet been able to make progress in negotiations to end the war in the Middle East and restore the interim agreement that the parties concluded in June.
