Ukraine and Lithuania coordinate efforts to accelerate EU and NATO accession

The Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, Ruslan Stefanchuk, held a meeting with the Speaker of the Seimas of Lithuania, Juozas Olekas, during which the parties discussed further steps to strengthen sanctions, economic and diplomatic pressure on Russia.

Stefanchuk reported on the results of the negotiations on his Facebook page.

According to him, the key topics of discussion were security cooperation, participation in international coalitions, and prospects for joint arms production. This visit was Olekas’ first since his election as speaker of the Lithuanian parliament.

During the meeting, both speakers confirmed their common position: a just and lasting peace is possible only if pressure is increased on the aggressor state and effective security guarantees are provided to Ukraine.

The parties paid special attention to issues of European and Euro-Atlantic integration. The parties agreed to intensify the exchange of parliamentary experience in order to accelerate Ukraine’s accession to the EU.

“We expect further support for Lithuania as it opens new negotiation clusters and on its path to NATO membership,” Stefanchuk emphasized.

He also reported that Juozas Olekas accepted an invitation to participate in the fourth parliamentary summit of the Crimean Platform, which will be held on November 23-24 in Stockholm.

The Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada thanked Lithuania for its consistent assistance to Ukraine in the military, humanitarian, energy spheres and in the reconstruction of infrastructure. According to Stefanchuk, the Republic of Lithuania is among the world leaders in terms of the volume of support to Ukraine relative to its own GDP, and the total contribution to strengthening the defense capabilities of our state has already exceeded 1.8 billion euros.

Recall that Lithuania and Estonia announced new contributions within the PURL initiative , aimed at joint weapons procurement for Ukraine.

It was also previously reported that Prime Ministers of Ukraine Yulia Svyrydenko and Lithuania Inga Ruginene announced new initiatives to support Ukraine . These include expanding assistance in the fields of defense, energy, and humanitarian programs, as well as political support for Ukraine’s accession to the European Union by 2030.
