Kyiv and Moscow are increasingly disillusioned with the US-mediated peace process and the role of Washington’s special envoy Steve Witkoff. Behind the scenes of diplomacy, attempts are underway to weaken his position and influence in the negotiations.

This is reported by The Kyiv Independent .

In early September, Witkoff and the US President’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner, visited Russia and Ukraine in an attempt to revive stalled talks. According to the publication, the trips did not bring any noticeable results.

Ukrainian officials have questioned Witkoff’s approach to negotiations and his understanding of war, citing a lack of seriousness in the negotiation process and excessive concessions to Vladimir Putin’s position.

Dissatisfaction with the American special envoy is also growing in Moscow. According to Ukrainian intelligence, Russian officials hold Vitkoff partly responsible for the failed summit in Alaska and a series of subsequent problems in the negotiations.

Separately, the parties are trying to weaken the connection between Witkoff and Putin’s special representative Kirill Dmitriev. At the same time, Russia is declaring its readiness to continue contacts with Washington not only through Witkoff’s channel, but also through other diplomatic channels.

Despite the discontent of Kyiv and Moscow, US President Donald Trump is not yet showing any willingness to remove Witkoff from the negotiation process. According to journalists, he wants to maintain control over this area.

By the way, CIA Director John Ratcliffe may get a key role in the negotiations between Ukraine, Russia and the United States, replacing Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner . US President Donald Trump has not yet made a final decision on changing the negotiating team.

Recall that Russia is allegedly ready to return to negotiations with Ukraine after the State Duma elections , which will be held in September. American negotiators informed their European partners about this during meetings in Kyiv.
