Ukraine and Sweden discussed Gripen and new defense projects

In Stockholm, Ukrainian Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov held a meeting with Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson and Defense Minister Poul Jönsson, during which the parties discussed strengthening defense cooperation, in particular Gripen fighters.

This was reported by the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine.

The department emphasized that the development of air defense and aviation remains key to protecting Ukrainian skies. Particular attention was paid to the prospects of receiving Gripen aircraft, which Ukraine sees as one of the factors in strengthening its defense capabilities.

The parties also discussed cooperation in the defense-industrial complex. These include joint projects in the field of anti-ballistic solutions, electronic warfare, and technology development.

Ukraine presented its partners with priority areas of support, including the development of PURL and JUMPSTART mechanisms, as well as strengthening middle strike capabilities.

Separately, Fedorov held a meeting with Saab, where the key topic was Gripen aircraft, as well as with Ovzon regarding the development of satellite communications for the needs of the Defense Forces.

The Ukrainian side proposed launching the BRAVE SWEDEN project based on the Brave1 innovation cluster for the development of joint defense startups and the exchange of combat experience.

The minister also met with Riksdag parliamentarians, where he presented the results of the implementation of Ukraine’s defense strategy and thanked Sweden for its support, in particular in the field of air defense, radars, and military equipment.

Earlier, Saab CEO Mikael Johansson said that an agreement to supply Ukraine with Saab JAS 39 Gripen fighters could be signed in the coming months. The deal involves the possible supply of 100 to 150 aircraft as part of Ukraine-Sweden defense cooperation.
