Ukrainian Energy Minister Denys Shmyhal announced talks with Turkish Energy and Natural Resources Minister Alparslan Bayraktar on joint energy projects, specifically the creation of a new gas supply route and hydrocarbon production in the Black Sea.

Shmigal wrote about this on Telegram.

According to him, the parties are interested in launching a new gas supply route using the Ukrainian gas transportation system and underground gas storage facilities.

“This project is capable of providing up to 5 billion cubic meters of gas per year not only for Ukraine but also for the countries of Central and Eastern Europe,” the minister noted.

A separate topic of discussion was the joint development of Black Sea gas fields. The parties are currently working on technical and commercial models for both projects.

The current state of the Ukrainian energy system and preparations for the upcoming heating season were also discussed during the meeting.

Shmyhal emphasized that the talks took place within the framework of agreements between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan on developing energy partnership and strengthening security in the Black Sea region.

Earlier, Ukrainian Energy Minister Denys Shmyhal stated that Ukraine needs at least €5.4 billion to prepare its power grid for winter. At the same time, the system requires an additional 6.5 gigawatts of capacity for stable operation.

As a reminder, Ukraine’s partners announced the allocation of €100 million for winter preparations during the Energy Ramstein meeting. The funds will be channeled through the Energy Support Fund.

Energy Minister Denys Shmyhal subsequently announced the restoration of 1 GW of power capacity in preparation for the next heating season. According to him, the government has set a strategic goal of restoring 6 GW of capacity by the start of the autumn-winter period. Of this, 3.8 GW comes from thermal power plants.
