Ukraine as a testing ground: North Korea is constantly improving its ballistic missiles thanks to cooperation with Russia

North Korea tested ballistic missiles twice in August but did not announce the launches in state media. Experts suggest that Pyongyang may have been testing modernized weapons, taking into account experience from the war in Ukraine and potential supplies from Russia.

According to the South Korean and Japanese military, one of the launches took place on August 12 from the Wonsan area. The missile flew about 700 km towards the Sea of Japan. Experts drew attention to the lack of reports of the test. Usually, the DPRK publicly covers important missile launches.

One version is that it was testing a modernized missile or conducting technical tests. However, there is currently no open evidence of a direct connection between the latest launches and missiles that Pyongyang is supplying to Russia.

According to expert Jagannath Panda, the assumption of a possible connection with the supply of missiles to Russia is “much more plausible,” but it is currently impossible to confirm it.

The war in Ukraine, according to the expert, could give Pyongyang practical data on the accuracy, guidance, reliability of missiles, and their ability to overcome air defense systems. In the future, this experience could be used to modernize North Korean missile weapons.

This is likely to include the KN-23 missiles that North Korea has already transferred to Russia. In early August, GUR representative Andriy Chernyak reported the transfer of another 40 KN-23 and KN-24 missiles to Moscow.

Recall that on the night of August 11, Russian troops attacked Zaporizhia with a Zircon anti-ship missile, guided aerial bombs, and KN-23 ballistic missiles that Russia received from North Korea.

It was previously reported that Russia has likely received a new batch of North Korean ballistic missiles and may increase their use in attacks on Ukraine . This is indicated by the resumption of the use of missiles produced by the DPRK after a break of almost a year.
