Ukraine has asked 40 partner countries to urgently transfer missiles for Patriot anti-aircraft missile systems as early as July. This is a mechanism for exchanging for future deliveries that have already been contracted for Ukraine.
This was reported by the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine.
The department emphasized that the main problem for protecting Ukrainian skies remains the shortage of missiles for the Patriot systems, which are used to intercept Russian ballistic missiles.
The Ministry of Defense recalled that in April, Ukraine first signed a record contract for the supply of hundreds of PAC-2 missiles for Patriot with support from Germany. However, these missiles will only begin to arrive in the coming years.
Ukraine has also begun the procedure for purchasing nearly a hundred Patriot missiles for the first time, worth about $1 billion, using European Union loan funds. In addition, this year the country has already begun receiving missiles from partner states.
The Ministry of Defense emphasized that these volumes are not yet sufficient for effective protection against Russian ballistic attacks.
“Ukraine critically needs additional missiles for the Patriot systems. They are in the warehouses of partners. The protection of Ukrainian skies depends on quick decisions, scaling the PURL mechanism, and purchasing missiles through JUMPSTART,” the department noted.
It was previously reported that Ukraine signed a contract with Germany for the supply of 600 missiles for Patriot anti-aircraft missile systems.
Recall that Ukraine may receive a license to produce missiles for Patriot anti-aircraft missile systems.
