Ukraine has decided to sever diplomatic relations with the Republic of Nicaragua. The reason was the country’s open support for Russia’s armed aggression against Ukraine and recognition of temporarily occupied Ukrainian territories as “part” of the Russian Federation.
This was announced by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on September 2.
Nicaragua officially recognized the annexation of Crimea, as well as the occupation of parts of Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhia and Kherson regions, thereby grossly violating the norms of international law. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiga stressed that such steps are direct evidence of the dependence of the Managua authorities on the Kremlin.
“Support for the armed aggression of the Russian Federation against Ukraine, an attempt to legitimize the forcible seizure of part of the territory of Ukraine, the official recognition of the so-called “DPR” and “LPR” and the opening of an illegal “honorary consulate of Nicaragua” on the territory of the temporarily occupied Autonomous Republic of Crimea, Ukraine, indicates Nicaragua’s political identification with the aggressor state and the direct financial and political dependence of the puppet regime of Managua on Moscow,” Sibiga said.
The Foreign Ministry emphasized that in response to such unfriendly actions, Ukraine is officially breaking off diplomatic relations with Nicaragua.
“This decisive diplomatic step is evidence that Ukraine will continue to react as harshly as possible in response to any attempts to encroach on its sovereignty and territorial integrity. We will not tolerate any encroachments on our statehood and will take all necessary measures to protect our independence, security, and the inviolability of our borders,” stressed Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiga.
Previously, Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega, along with his wife and co-president Rosario Murillo, publicly declared their full support for the actions of Russian dictator Vladimir Putin in the war against Ukraine.
The NSDC also decided to impose sanctions against eight individuals who were involved in the opening of the so-called “diplomatic mission” of Nicaragua in the occupied territory of Crimea.
