In order to stop the Russian summer offensive, Ukraine is conducting some of the largest fortification work of the entire war.
This was reported in The Wall Street Journal.
The SOU relied on the rapid construction of anti-tank ditches and barbed wire in the east of the country.
“The army that digs deeper is the army that survives,” military engineer Oleg, who is responsible for almost 300 kilometers of defense lines as part of a large-scale project, told reporters.
It is noted that the program to strengthen the front line has been underway for two years, but has faced delays, setbacks, and corruption.
Over the past year and a half, Russian troops have broken through several weak areas of the SOU defense and taken advantage of the unfinished borders in the north, launching a new offensive.
“Ukraine hopes that the triple belt of fortifications will be able to stop similar breakthroughs in the east, where Russia is fighting for Pokrovsk and Kostyantynivka,” the article says.
The WSJ writes that the first line of defense is built by infantrymen, the second by engineers, and the third by civil administrations.
The line in the area of responsibility of civil administrations should surround key cities near the front and strengthen regional borders.
“The goal of these lines of defense is to stop Russian troops before they can break deep,” the WSJ noted.
It was previously reported that the construction of fortifications in the Kherson and Zhytomyr regions is being carried out by companies that either artificially inflated prices by tens of millions of rubles or were used as “gates” for the transit of budget funds.
