Today, August 3, is the Day of the Air Force of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. This holiday is established on the first Sunday of August according to the Decree of the President of June 27, 2007.

With the establishment of the Air Force Day of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the Day of the Air Defense Troops was abolished. This is due to the fact that in 2004, during the unification of the Air Defense Troops and the Air Force, the modern Air Force of Ukraine was created.

The history of world aviation is closely connected with the Ukrainian land. The designer of one of the first airplanes, Alexander Mozhaisky, who took to the air, the founder of the theory of rocketry Nikolai Kibalchich, and the creator of combat missiles Alexander Zasyadko created in Ukraine.

The aircraft builders Igor Sikorsky and Dmitry Grigorievich were Ukrainians.

Fearless Ukrainian ace pilots Konstantin Artseulov and Vladimir Dybovsky were the first to learn how to spin planes out of free fall.

Pilot Evgraf Kruten laid the foundations of fighter aviation tactics, which are the basis for today’s air combat techniques.

The first military fleet was created in Ukraine back in 1917, when the UPR existed. Its commander was military pilot Viktor Pavlenko.

Three air armies were transferred to the Ukrainian Air Force, which amounted to 1,100 combat aircraft of various types. Currently, the Air Force includes bomber, fighter, attack, reconnaissance, transport aviation and anti-aircraft, missile and radio-technical troops.

In 2014, aviation was used from the first days of the anti-terrorist operation. However, at first it was transport aviation, performing the functions of transporting personnel and cargo, as well as reconnaissance flights. Permission to use weapons was granted to the Air Force only after the first aircraft was shot down – the An-30B photo reconnaissance aircraft.

In 2022, the Air Force was the first to enter the battle. The enemy tried to destroy the entire air defense system of the country – to blind our eyes, destroy our air defense shield, and sought to gain dominance in the Ukrainian skies so that aircraft could bomb our cities and infrastructure with impunity. Therefore, the first targets of the occupiers were radar units, anti-aircraft missile forces, military airfields, and command posts.

The Air Force withstood the first powerful blows of the enemy. Dozens of Air Force soldiers received the highest title of Hero of Ukraine. Hundreds were awarded high state awards. Unfortunately, many of them died defending the Ukrainian sky.

At present, the Air Force soldiers daily repel air and missile attacks by the invaders, inflicting significant losses on the enemy, step by step bringing victory over the enemy closer.
