Ukraine celebrates Defenders’ Day on October 1. The modern date is much more than just a military holiday: it combines Cossack tradition, the history of the Ukrainian army, and the modern Armed Forces.
It is on October 1 that Ukraine also celebrates Ukrainian Cossack Day and Veteran’s Day. That is, on one day in the state calendar, the memory of the military tradition of the past, modern defenders, and those who have already completed their service are combined. Veteran’s Day has been celebrated on October 1 since 2004.
The holiday appeared after the war began in 2014.
Defender of Ukraine Day was officially established in October 2014, after the beginning of Russian aggression against Ukraine.
The corresponding decree No. 806/2014 was signed by then-President Petro Poroshenko. The document established a new holiday to honor the courage and heroism of those who defend the independence and territorial integrity of Ukraine.
That same year, the Soviet-origin holiday of February 23, Defender of the Fatherland Day, was finally abolished. The Verkhovna Rada notes that it was in effect in Ukraine from 1999 to October 2014.
Why was it originally October 14th?
The first date of the new holiday was October 14 .
It was associated with the Protection of the Most Holy Theotokos, which was especially revered by Ukrainian Cossacks. The Ukrainian Institute of National Remembrance reminds us that the Protection was also called the Cossack Protection, and on this day the Cossacks held councils and elected a hetman or a starshyna.
Therefore, the modern holiday did not simply replace the Soviet February 23rd – it was based on its own Ukrainian military tradition.
Why is it October 1st now?
In 2023, the date changed along with the transition of Ukrainian churches to a new calendar.
Presidential Decree No. 455/2023 moved the date of Defenders’ Day from October 14 to October 1. The same decree also moved the Day of the Ukrainian Cossacks to October 1.
That is why the date has changed, but not the historical logic of the holiday – it remains, as before, connected with the Intercession.
Why did the word “protectors” appear in the name?
Initially, the official name was “Defender of Ukraine Day” .
In 2021, the Verkhovna Rada adopted Law No. 1643-IX , which changed the name of the Labor Code to “Day of Defenders of Ukraine” .
The presidential office explained at the time that the change was intended to emphasize the role of female military personnel in defending the state.
In 2023, the new name was already fixed directly in the presidential decree on the holiday.
“Mazepinka” in the modern army has a century-old history
One of the less obvious connections between the modern Armed Forces of Ukraine and previous generations of the Ukrainian military can be seen literally in the military uniform.
The “mazepinka” headdress originates from Cossack headdresses of the 17th century. Later it was worn by the Ukrainian Sich Riflemen, soldiers of the Galician Army, the Carpathian Sich, and the UPA.
Since 2017, the “mazepinka” has been the official headdress of the Armed Forces of Ukraine .
The trident on the sleeve is also not a modern invention
Another example of historical inheritance is the sleeve trident.
Similar insignia were worn by soldiers of the Army of the Ukrainian People’s Republic, in particular Chief Ataman Symon Petliura. The Ukrainian Institute of National Remembrance cites an order from 1919, which already described a cloth trident for military uniforms.
The modern Armed Forces of Ukraine thus continue the symbolism of the Ukrainian army of the early 20th century.
“Glory to Ukraine!” became the official military salute
Another symbol that has passed from historical tradition to the modern army is the greeting “Glory to Ukraine! – Glory to the Heroes!” .
In 2018, it became the official military salute of the Ukrainian army. The Ukrainian Institute of National Remembrance also calls it one of the examples of heredity between different generations of Ukrainian military personnel.
October 1 is not just a day of congratulations
During the full-scale war, Defenders’ Day acquired another obvious dimension – the memory of those who died.
Therefore, October 1 is increasingly perceived not only as a day of greetings to the military, but also as a day of honoring the fallen, veterans, and all generations of Ukrainians who fought for statehood.
From the Cossacks and the Army of the UNR to the modern Armed Forces of Ukraine, weapons, uniforms, and war itself have changed, but some symbols and military traditions have survived the centuries.
